PV modules consist of solar cells which are covered by a piece of protective glass. Since solar panels are exposed to environmental conditions their glass requires frequent cleaning. Staining, dirt and grime, leaves, pollen, dirt droppings, lime-scale and other pollutants prevent solar radiation from reaching the cells of solar panels and as a result, the efficiency of the solar system is reduced.

Water is the main origin of solar panels’ soiling. Condensed vapors carrying dirt particles enter the glass pores. Water is then vaporized leaving behind a dirty residue, which cannot be easily removed.
Something that perhaps only a few know is that there is a critical topography of the protective glass panel or, in other words, an optimum level of surface roughness, the maintenance of which ensures maximum efficiency of the PV modules, due to reflection reduction. However, this topography can be destroyed by environmental factors or by the use of improper cleansers.
